Stengel bzw. Stamm: Sehr groß werdend, bis 3 m hoch und 0,70—1 m breit, graugrün; Scheitel mit lohfarbenem Wollschopf; Rippen bis 40, schmal und hoch, oben ± längsgefurchte Kante; Areolen länglich, die oberen sich fast berührend; Stacheln 4, über Kreuz gestellt, spreizend, blaßbraun, der oberste stärkste bis 5 cm lang, aufrecht stehend

Blüte: 7—8 cm breit im Hochstand; Petalen zahlreich, oblong-spatelig, gezähnelt, gelb, ca. 3,5 cm lang; Röhre dickwollig, oben spitzliche Schuppen herausragend; Ovarium verlängert, bis 1 cm lang; Perianth vertrocknet sitzenbleibend; Narben ca. 12, spreizend; Staubbl. zahlreich

Frucht bzw. Samen: zylindrisch, obere herausragende Schuppen fast stechend. Die Rippen sind ± stumpf, etwas wellig, aber kaum gehöckert.

Genussmittel, Nahrungsmittel
Stammark:

zu Salat, Gemüse Diente wegen seines saftigen Fleisches den Einheimischen in der Wildnis als Trinkwasserersatz. Schnitzel des Kaktus wurden auch mit Zusckersirup kandiert und dienten als Süßspeise. Historisch wurde er von indianischen Völkern auch als Opfertisch bei Opferzeremonien genutzt.
