Genussmittel, Nahrungsmittel:
Knollen: Gemüse
Die Wurzeln werden roh oder gekocht gegessen, sie waren bei einigen Indianerstämmen ein Grundnahrungsmittel.


Medizinisch:
Die Pflanze wirkt kardiotonisch, schwach harntreibend und hepatisch.
Die ganze Pflanze wirkt antitussiv und beruhigend.
In China werden die Pflanzen bei Abdomen, Abszessen, Ödeme, besonders Stauungsödeme und Blutaustritten bzw. Extravastation angewandt. Der Sud dient der Behandlung von Blähungen, Abszessen, schmerzhaften Verletzungen, Menstruationsbeschwerden, Inkontinenz und anderen Beschwerden.

Die oberirdischen Teile enthalten Harze, Lycopose, Raffinose, Glucose, Stachyose.
