Genussmittel, Nahrungsmittel:
Das aus den Wurzeln gewinnbare Gummi wird gekaut.

Medizinisch:
Die Abkochung der Zweige wurde bei Husten, Brustschmerzen und Zahnschmerzen verwendet, die Infusion blühender Zweige wurde bei Erkältung und Tuberkulose genutzt.
Die Infusion von Blättern und Stängeln diente der Behandlung von Durchfall, Magenkrämpfen, Erkältungen und äußerlich als Waschmittel bei Wunden, Hautausschlägen, besonders Pocken.

Die Pflanze wirkt bakterizid.
