Samen: sind essbar, waren wichtiges Nahrungsmittel der Indianer
Die Samen werden roh oder gekocht gegessen, sie dienen gemahlen auch zum Strecken von Mehl.

Medizinisch:
Bei Verletzungen wird die gekaute Wurzel auf Schnitte aufgetragen, eine Pflanzenabkochung dient als nachgeburtliches Mittel und als Gegenmittel bei Vergiftung.
